'No universal solution to hip replacement'

There is no catch-all solution to the problem of hip replacement surgery, it has been claimed.

According to Dr Patrick A. Meere, a professor of orthopaedic surgery, custom solutions to joint replacement are becoming the norm.

Speaking to the New York Times, Dr Meere said: "There is no longer any universal formula for patients who need a hip replacement."

"Custom solutions, which may include minimally invasive surgeries, should be the product of an educated conversation between patient and physician that focuses on activity goals and recovery time as well as realistic indications and limitations," he added.

His comments mirror an article published on Device Link last year, which claimed that additive manufacturing, 3D printing and advanced prototyping technologies are changing the way that the components involved in orthopaedic surgery are created.

The website claimed that these cutting-edge manufacturing techniques mean a new wave of personalised components tailored to specific patients could be on the horizon.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19626804-ADNFCR
