A new study has found 30 per cent of medial meniscal tears are eligible for all-biologic repair.
Research published in the Journal of Knee Surgery has found that ten per cent of lateral tears can also be treated in this way.
The study examined meniscal tears and found that longitudinal forms are the most common morphology of the wound, while they are most frequently treated with a partial meniscectomy.
Nearly a third of both medial and lateral tears could be dealt with through the advanced repair technique, while 35 and 55 per cent respectively are eligible for scaffold replacement, the research found.
"The results of this cohort will hopefully stimulate and focus future research and development of new tissues engineering strategies for meniscus repair," the authors concluded.
In other news, the Italian journal Hip International recently reported that new research has found the ligamentum teres has the potential to heal following operations.
