Arthritis Research UK funds new osteoarthritis study

Scientists in Aberdeen have been awarded funding by Arthritis Research UK to conduct an investigation into the impact of stem cell activity on cartilage repair.

Professor Cosimo de Bari, of the University of Aberdeen's division of applied medicine, and his team have received three years of funding worth a total of £163,301 for the research programme.

The researchers are hoping that the investigation will help create new treatments for the degenerative condition.

Professor de Bari said: "There is an unmet medical need for drugs that can prevent or halt osteoarthritis and restore a normal joint, but their development is limited because of the poor knowledge of the mechanisms underlying this very common joint condition."

"If we knew the role of these stem cells in cartilage regeneration we would be able to develop new medications," he added.

Research published on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences website has shown that a new nanofibre gel matrix could be used to stimulate stem cell activity, which could in turn repair damaged cartilage.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19784398-ADNFCR
