An article on the role of platelet-rich plasma in the repair of connective tissue was the most read article of 2009 on Ortho Supersite.
The top ten list, which was generated from a number of the website's publications – such as Orthopedics Today and Orthopaedics Today Europe – included a mixture of editorial pieces on clinical treatments, healthcare reform and litigation.
Other articles to make it into the top ten were Apophyseal Avulsion Fractures of the Hip and Pelvis (at number three) and Intramedullary Hip Screw vs Standard Compression Hip Screw: Early Postoperative Rehabilitation Comparisons.
Explaining the popularity of the platelet article in orthopaedic circles, Steven Arnoczky, moderator at the article top ten discussion, which has been held for the last six years, told Orthopedics Today: "There has been a growing interest in the use of 'biologics' in orthopedics, and platelet-rich plasma represents an autologous source of potent bioactive [growth] factors."
He added that the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of cartilage damage is, as yet, unproven making it a good topic for conversation.
Last year, a Cochrane Systematic Review concluded that more research was needed in the field of biologics.
