Autogenous patellar tendon grafts 'facilitate a swift return to sport'

Autogenous patellar tendon grafts may facilitate a swift return to strenuous levels of activity - such as sport.

According to new research presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, while autograft and allograft patellar tendon anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction offer similar clinical outcomes in high-demand patients, autogenous patellar tendon grafts may help patients avoid knee laxity.

Orthopaedic surgeon Randy Mascarenhas was reported by Ortho Supersite as saying: "The literature has shown that patellar tendon autograft anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is the gold standard in high-demand patients, but allograft reconstruction is gaining popularity due to decreased on-site morbidity and easier rehabilitation."

He added that half of the patients the surgeon and his team looked at who underwent autograft or allograft reconstruction returned to previous levels of sporting activity.

Recent research presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons showed that high impact sporting activity has no discernable effect on knee arthroplasty component durability.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19816493-ADNFCR
