Cam lesion treatment with arthroscopic femoral osteochondroplasty 'beneficial'

The treatment of cam lesions with arthroscopic femoral osteochondroplasty can be beneficial, it has been claimed.

According to new research conducted by surgeons from Israel, Australia and the UK, arthroscopic femoral osteochondroplasty as a treatment for cam impingement in patients with microfactures is affected by the severity of acetabular chondral damage.

"Significantly better results were observed in hips with less severe chondral damage. Microfracture in limited chondral lesions showed superior results," the researchers claimed.

Writing in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, they concluded that the correlation between the severity of acetabular chondral damage and outcome was particularly strong.

The researchers looked at 166 patients during the course of their retrospective study.

Outcomes were assessed using a modified Harris Hip Score and the Non-Arthritic Hip Score.

Recent research conducted in Belgium and published in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that elderly patients who suffer a hip fracture have an increased mortality risk in the first three months following injury.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19816462-ADNFCR
