Ceramic-on-ceramic bearings 'produce excellent mid-term results'

Medium-term tests on ceramic-on-ceramic bearings for total hip replacements have found excellent clinical and radiological results, new research reveals.

A study published in Italian scientific journal Hip International has found that different surfaces for this part of the implant are used to minimise the risk of osteolysis, with this form providing strong results.

While the authors acknowledge the need for long-term tests to assess this form of joint's survivability, the retrospective review has found only three of the subjects experienced massive heterotopic ossification.

A total of 107 hip replacements are being followed as part of the study, with a mean Harris hip score of 90 recorded.

"Continued follow-up will be required to determine if this ceramic-on-ceramic bearing is associated with extended survivorship," they conclude.

The journal recently published research suggesting that instability following primary total hip replacement is easier to treat than after a revision operation, with a difference of 25 per cent in success rates.
