Chronic shoulder dislocation treatment with RTSA

The treatment of chronic shoulder dislocation with reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) offers good outcomes, it has been claimed.

According to researchers from Romania and France, RTSA generated improvements in mobility, stability and shoulder scores.

The scientist, who looked at six patients in total, also found that there was an improvement in the day-to-day lives of all those treated with the procedure.

In their paper Treatment of Chronic Dislocations of the Shoulder by Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Clinical Study of Six Cases, Marinel Drignei, from the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Central Military University Hospital in Romania, and Marius Scarlat, from Clinique Chirurgicale St Michel's Shoulder and Elbow Service in France, also showed that improved pain relief was another benefit of the procedure.

The scientists looked at six patients suffering from fracture dislocations after corrective surgery. They assessed the patients, who ranged in age from 58 to 82, at four and 78 months after the original injury.

They concluded that while the sample size was small, the paper's positive results make RTSA for chronic dislocation sufferers worth debating.

According to researchers from Italy, pre-disposition to shoulder dislocation can generally be assessed ahead of shoulder replacement surgery.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19479488-ADNFCR
