Closed reduction hampered by femur and acetabulum fractures

Closed reduction as a means of treatment in patients who have sustained fractures of both the neck of the femur and of the posterior wall of the acetabulum is not advisable.

According to new research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, a better approach is to use controlled open reduction of the fractures following surgical dislocation of the hip with trochanteric flip osteotomy.

The researchers behind the new one-person study, from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Bern, in Switzerland, claimed that fracture to both the femur and the acetabular wall is relatively uncommon.

However, in their paper they showed that closed reduction in this case had already failed.

Earlier research featured in the publication showed that patient-specific approach during the reduction and internal fixation of tibial fractures could dramatically improve outcomes and reduce the incidence of soft tissue complications - such as thromboembolism.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19672001-ADNFCR
