Swedish researchers have found that cytokine levels could indicate a person's risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
According to Solbritt Rantapaa-Dahlqvist, lead researcher of the study into the link between rheumatoid arthritis and cytokine levels, the results are a positive step towards accurate monitoring of the progressive condition.
He said: "Our findings present an opportunity for better predicting the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and possibly preventing disease progression."
The researchers looked at 86 individuals with no rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, 69 patients who had the condition and 256 control subjects.
They concluded that cytokine levels in patients significantly increase years before the development of rheumatoid arthritis.
Meanwhile, recent research published in the January issue of Arthritis Care & Research showed that middle-aged patients suffering from early onset of osteoarthritis should carry out self-management to actively reduce their pain.
