Expert: Learn about arthritis to manage it

The first step arthritis patients should take to combat their pain is to become informed on the condition, states an expert.

Michele Sevier, an educator and advocate of natural health and healing, said it is estimated that three-quarters of people will experience chronic pain and inflammation in their lifetime, adding that it is important they learn about the problem from the outset.

The expert says chronic pain can be affected by a number of factors, including diet, lifestyle habits, environmental agents and physical trauma, stating that each of these aspects should be explored and assessed.

People wanting to relieve the pain without drugs can opt to increase their omega-3 essential fatty acids, which have been shown to help.

Once patients have learnt about the cause of their pain, such as arthritis, they should develop a pain management plan with their doctor, Ms Sevier stated.

Arthritis patients have also been encouraged to walk regularly by the Arthritis Foundation, which says they should gradually increase the frequency and length of the exercise.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19191459-ADNFCR
