High union rates observed in infraclavicular fracture surgery

Scientists have observed high rates of union in young patients with displaced clavicle fractures when using infraclavicular surgery.

According to the new study, presented at the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) Congress 2010, using the technique often results in excellent outcomes and a swifter-than-normal union rate.

This often results in high levels of patient satisfaction and an early return to work, the researchers behind the paper were reported by Ortho Supersite as saying.

Shiv A. Jain, who talked about the new study, said the major benefits of infraclavicular fracture surgery were "the lower complication rate and reduced need for metalwork removal".

The retrospective study looked at 35 patients with significant fracture displacement - 21 of whom were subjected to the infraclavicular approach.

Earlier research, entitled Adult Midshaft Clavicle Fractures: An Indicator for Surgical Intervention, showed that early intervention in adult midshaft clavicle fractures can impact on patients' outcomes.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19824882-ADNFCR
