High-volume surgeons offer better outcomes

Surgeons who conduct a large number of total hip arthroplasty operations offer better cup positioning than those who carry out relatively fewer procedures.

However, according to a new study presented at the 56th annual meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society, regardless of the volume of total hip arthroplasties an orthopaedic surgeon carries out during their working week, optimal cup positioning is still attained less than half of the time.

However, the research, presented by Bryan Jarrett, showed that low-volume surgeons were twice as likely to mal-position the cup.

"When we just looked at high-volume surgeons, 38 per cent of the patients fell within the optimal ranges," Jarrett said.

He added: "When we just looked at low-volume surgeons, we saw that 26 per cent of the patients were within the optimal ranges."

The study also showed a six-fold increase in malpositioning in minimally-invasive surgery when compared to posterolateral procedures.

Research recently published in the European Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery showed that femoral head positioning is critically important during hip surgery.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19661636-ADNFCR
