IOF releases new vitamin D guidance

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has issued a new set of guidelines which includes recommendations relating to vitamin D supplements for elderly patients.

IOF's statement, which was published in the journal Osteoporosis International, suggests that the decision to offer vitamin D supplements to the elderly should be entirely based on evidence.

As a result it has revised its daily dose guideline figure from an average of 800IU to 1,000IU - which will result in a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 30ng/ml.

However, the organisation noted: "Efficacy of doses higher than 800 IU per day for fractures and 1,000 IU per day for falls, however, have not been evaluated in randomized, controlled trials.

"It is therefore premature to recommend higher intakes for all older adults at this time," it added.

Recent research published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism showed that low levels of blood serum vitamin D could increase the risk of hip osteoarthritis in the elderly.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19784344-ADNFCR
