Inside-out suturing offers better outcomes during meniscal repair

Patients who undergo inside-out suturing during reparation of meniscal tears are more likely to experience a successful outcome when compared to those who are treated with an all-inside technique.
According to research conducted by Belgian orthopaedic surgeons and presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, there were generally fewer complications associated with the inside-out method.
Geert Meermans, who presented the research, told Ortho Supersite: "In our hands, the inside-out technique had a better chance of success compared to an all-inside technique."
During the cohort study, the researchers looked at the records of 112 meniscal repairs in patients with a direct meniscal injury.
Patients were followed up 79 months after undergoing surgical repair.
The researchers noted that those who underwent inside-out surgery were, on average, three years younger than their all-inside counterparts.
Recent research published on Ortho Supersite showed that hyaluronic acid injections could help during meniscal repair.
