Interscalene block possible with ultrasound guidance

The use of interscalene blocks during orthopaedic surgery is possible when surgeons use ultrasound guidance, it has been claimed.

According to new research presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, accurate placement of an interscalene block results in high patient satisfaction and a low incidence of catastrophic events.

Speaking to an audience of surgeons and orthopaedic industry professionals, Anshuman Singh, leader of the new study, was reported by Ortho Supersite as saying: "Some surgeons advise against the use of interscalene block with their particular patients, probably because early literature had a high rate of catastrophic events."

"If you want some numbers to take home and counsel your patients with preoperatively, about 1 in 100 patients will not be satisfied with the block," he added.

Recent research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery showed that infection is the biggest influencing factor when it comes to surgical revision.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19790179-ADNFCR
