Irish orthopaedic surgeons appeal for Haiti support

A team of Irish surgeons have called on surgical supply companies to donate items that would help doctors on the ground in Haiti offer better medical support to those injured in the recent magnitude 7.0 earthquake, it has been reported.

The Irish Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery has called on surgical supply companies, pharmaceutical firms and orthopaedic device providers to offer their products free of charge, according to the Irish Times.

The institute is sending a 12-member team, including three orthopaedic surgeons, to Haiti this month to bolster the treatment of those with injuries and disabilities incurred during the earthquake.

Speaking to the news provider, David Moore, president of the institute, said: "Some of us felt very strongly that we should get involved.
"Our focus at first will be to address immediate needs, but our aim is long-term."

Mr Moore is also hoping to raise money from the public to purchase supplies and have them shipped to Haiti.

The massive earthquake hit the country on Tuesday January 12th and the death toll is believed to be as high as 200,000.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19590744-ADNFCR
