Joint replacement procedures 'on the rise'

There has been a significant rise in the number of total joint replacement procedures being carried out, an expert has claimed.

Dr Per Kjaersgaard-Andersen, writing for Orthopaedics Today Europe, claimed that this trend is leading medical professionals to analyse the procedure's popularity and how this will affect the treatment in future.

An ageing population, better general health and a higher demand for a longer, more active lifestyle are all behind the rise in total joint replacement procedures, he asserted.

Medical professionals are becoming increasingly confident about identifying the need for the procedures, leading to a boost in the number of operations being carried out.

Dr Kjaersgaard-Andersen stated: "Another reason could be the fact that the infrastructure and access to total [knee replacement] services has improved, allowing surgeons today to treat the actual need better."

Recent research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery has found that 43 per cent of patients' expectations from hip replacement operations were fulfilled.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19382142-ADNFCR
