Knee alignment not linked to post-operative pain

Pre-operative knee alignment has no impact on post-operative pain experienced by patients undergoing treatment for osteoarthritis, it has been claimed.

According to researchers investigating the association between knee alignment and knee pain in subjects who are treated with high tibial osteotomy, alignment and pain appear to be separate entities.

High tibial osteotomy is a common treatment for people suffering from osteoarthritis, and the researchers behind this recent study, which was published in the latest issue of BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, believed patients undergoing the procedure would be ideal candidates for gauging the relationship between the two factors.

The scientists looked at 182 patients and measured knee alignment prior to surgery using radiographs and assessed pain scores with the KOOS test.

They found that there was no link between pre-operative knee alignment and pre-operative pain scores or, in fact, alignment and change in KOOS over time.

However, other research shows that post-operative knee alignment following total knee arthroplasty is important in the efficacy of the procedure on peroneal nerve palsy treatment.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19509545-ADNFCR
