Range of motion knee injuries are common among many athletes, according to a website.
Emax Health claims that hyperextension injuries are commonly caused when the knee is "forced backwards", with the joint's range of motion severely limited as a result.
It claims that hyperextended knee injuries are very prevalent among sportsmen, as a lot of exercise can put a lot of demand on the joints.
Those particularly at risk from hyperextension of the knee include those who jump and make contact as part of the sport, including dancers, volleyball players and gymnasts.
"The anterior cruciate ligament can be torn when the knee is hyperextended, leading to a more serious injury. The tear can be partial or complete. Surgery might be required, followed by physical therapy and six to nine months recovery time before engaging in sports activity," said the site.
Tiger Woods recently recovered from knee surgery after his joint was found to be audibly creaking and groaning at last year's US Open.
The superstar suffered an eight month lay-off after the cruciate ligament surgery and has only just returned to the sport.
