Link found between tibial plateau depression and lateral meniscal tears

Surgeons have found a link between tibial plateau depression and lateral meniscal tears.
According to researchers behind the paper Lateral Tibial Plateau Fracture Depression as a Predictor of Lateral Meniscus Pathology, which was published in Orthopaedics 2010, the goal of the study was to determine if the severity of lateral tibial plateau fracture depression on computed tomography (CT) images predicted the presence of lateral meniscus tears.
"In our study, we found that tibial plateau depression using coronal CT reformatted images alone can be a useful predictor of associated meniscal pathology," the scientists said.
"A greater degree of plateau depression was associated with a significantly increased risk of injury to the meniscus," they added.
The researchers concluded that the results of the paper could be used to make surgeons more vigilant when examining the soft tissues of the knee.
Recent research published in the Osteoarthritis and Cartilage journal showed that over time meniscus wear and tear could be accurately monitored using computer imaging software to calculate the articular disc's volume.
