Luxatio erecta treatment outcomes are 'often good'

The treatment of inferior shoulder dislocation - also known as luxatio erecta - often has excellent outcomes, it has been claimed.
According to new research published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, while luxatio erecta is a relatively uncommon injury, accounting for less than 0.5 per cent of all shoulder dislocations, successful outcomes are achieved in 83 per cent of cases.
The researchers behind the paper, entitled Results of Treatment of Luxatio Erecta (Inferior Shoulder Dislocation), looked at 20 shoulders of 18 patients between 1968 and 2000.
They found that half of the patients studied only required closed reduction.
"Patients treated with closed reduction or operative treatment compared favorably in terms of improvements in ratings for pain, strength, motion, and the ability to perform work and sports," they said.
Of the 16 patients that received a follow-up assessment, 13 had either good or excellent outcomes.
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery recently published research which claimed that elderly women and young men are the most likely to suffer from shoulder dislocation during sporting activity.
