MRI is 'the imaging tool of choice for ganglion cysts'

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice for patients with suspected symptomatic ganglion cysts.

According to a paper published in Orthopaedics 2010, the widespread use of MRI and arthroscopy to evaluate patients' painful knee joints has boosted the prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament ganglion cysts.

And, although they are generally considered asymptomatic, signs and symptoms of anterior cruciate ligament ganglion cysts may mimic internal derangement.

Trevor Morrison and his team said: "Treatment is not recommended for anterior cruciate ligament cysts discovered incidentally on MRI if the patient is asymptomatic.

"However, if they are incidentally found at arthroscopy, they should be removed because they can become symptomatic."

Recent research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery has cast doubt on the optimal time for reparation of damaged knee ligaments.

The researchers looked at 24 previous studies before concluding that "chronic intervention provides results that are at least as good as acute intervention".ADNFCR-2255-ID-19613753-ADNFCR
