No difference in outcome for gender specific knee replacements

New research has shown that gender specific knee replacement components may be no more beneficial when it comes to patient outcome than standard devices.

The study, published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and entitled Comparison of Standard and Gender-Specific Posterior-Cruciate-Retaining High-Flexion Total Knee Replacements, showed that the differences between standard and non-standard joint replacements were clinically negligible.

"We found no significant differences between the two groups with regard to the clinical and radiological results, patient satisfaction or complication rate," the researchers said.

They looked at 138 female patients in total who ranged in age from 51 to 82. The patients were split into two groups and each received either a gender-specific or standard knee replacement component.

"Patient satisfaction, the radiological results and the complication rates were similar in the two groups," the researchers added.

Last year, industry news website Device Link claimed that new manufacturing techniques would make tailored joint replacements much more commonplace.
