Osseointegration volume is a predictor of mechanical fixation strength

Osseointegration volume/total volume can be used as a predictor of mechanical fixation strength in femoral implants, it has been claimed.

Presented at the 56th Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the research, which looked at the mechanical fixation strength in a rat femoral implantation model, showed that the correlation of bone volume/tissue volume was "high for the region of interest located within 16 µm of the implant surface but, at regions of interest further removed from the implant, the correlations were negligible".

The researchers concluded that the use of micro-CT imaging data, which was used to assess volumes, should only be used as a guide to predict implant fixation and should not be "over-interpreted as a measurement of bone-implant contact", reports Ortho Supersite.

Last year, researchers from the Republic of Ireland found that patients who undergo corrective surgery after experiencing hip fracture fixation failure are at a high risk of complication.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19672029-ADNFCR
