Outlook for Orthopaedic industry is looking up

The orthopaedic industry is looking strong despite the ongoing global economic downturn, it has been claimed.

According to Leerink-Swann analyst Rick Wise, Biomet's quarterly results show that the hip and knee replacement component markets are "stable-to-improving" despite pressures on pricing and a struggling European economy.

Mr Wise said that the latest figures from Biomet could be a harbinger of good news for a steadily improving orthopaedic market.

Biomet narrowed its losses from £24.2 million in 2008 to just £4.4 million and it has witnessed an 11 per cent increase in knee reconstructions and a seven per cent increase in hip reconstructions over the past 12 months.

At the end of last year, researchers from Denmark claimed that demand for efficacious osteoporosis and osteoarthritis treatments would drive research into pain management and musculoskeletal disorders.

They claimed that a full-scale medical trial of analgesic calcitonin should be conducted as the drug could fill a gap in the pain management of musculoskeletal disorders.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19563275-ADNFCR
