Post orthopaedic surgery thrombosis treatment studied

A post-operative thrombosis treatment which has just received approval in the European Union and Canada has offered positive results.

According to Walter Ageno, from the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Insubria in Italy, patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgery – such as total hip arthroplasty or total knee arthroplasty – are at an increased risk of venous thromboembolism in the days and weeks after surgery.

As a result, thromboprophylaxis is considered a standard post-operative treatment for such patients.

There are a number of compounds available which offer thromboprophylaxic properties and one relatively new remedy, rovaroxaban recently received marketing approval in the European Union and Canada following successful clinical trials.

In the phase III, trial rivaroxaban was compared with enoxaparin in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty.

Meanwhile, a recent Cochrane Systematic Review showed that more research needs to be carried out to discover if the use of biologics could reduce the need for knee replacement surgery in osteoarthritis patients.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19479499-ADNFCR
