Snapping tendons can benefit from surgery

Snapping iliopsoas tendons can be successfully treated with arthroscopy, it has been claimed.

According to new research, surgical intervention is effective and further investigation should be mounted into the benefits of arthroscopy as compared to other treatments - including non-surgical ones.

Seven patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery through the central compartment of the hip for the treatment of snapping iliopsoas tendons were assessed prior to surgery as well as post-operatively - at three, six, 12 and 24 months.

Pain was assessed on a visual analogue scale and functionality was monitored using the Harris hip score.

"All the patients had resolution of snapping post-operatively and this persisted at follow-up at two years," the surgeons wrote in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

"There were no complications and no weakness occurred in the musculature around the hip," they added.

Research presented at a recent Knee Society Specialty Day Meeting showed that a history of tendon surgery increased the risk of patellar crepitus following total knee arthroplasty.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19830261-ADNFCR
