Study: Longer waiting times do not lead to poorer health

Patients who have to wait longer for their hip replacement surgery are not in poorer health when they are operated on, new research from Finland finds.

Research carried out in the Nordic country found there was no difference in health status between people who had waited an average of three months and those who waited for seven months, reports Medical News Today.

A study carried out in Finnish hospitals of patients waiting for hip replacement surgery found that while there was little health difference patients were affected in the lead up to the operation.

According to the source, the study finds there are "clear restrictions in physical and psychological dimensions of health during the waiting time".

The findings will be presented in the Value in Health, which is the official journal of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research.

Success rates for people who undergo hip replacements due to arthritis are 95 per cent, with this group seeing no pain at all following the surgery, according to figures from Arthritis Care.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19145871-ADNFCR
