Vitamin D osteoarthritis link warrants further investigation

Vitamin D levels in a person's blood serum positively correlates with a patient's outcome after undergoing total hip replacement surgery, it has been claimed.

According to new research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, vitamin D deficiency in patients was a risk factor for suboptimal outcome and is something that can be easily addressed at a relatively low cost.

The researchers behind the study, entitled Vitamin D Deficiency in Patients with Osteoarthritis Undergoing Total Hip Replacement, looked at 62 patients in total.

Ahead of hip replacement surgery, the subjects were split into two groups. Those that had sufficient levels of vitamin D and those who did not.

Ahead of surgery, those with vitamin D deficiency had lower Harris hip scores and postoperatively they were less likely to attain a good or excellent outcome.

Recent research published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism highlighted the link between low vitamin D levels in the elderly and the chances of developing osteoarthritis.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19731670-ADNFCR
