Titanium Closed Pore Porous Coating - A Proven Fixation Method

The closed pore porous coating at the back of the ReCap resurfacing acetabular cup is:

Biomet was the first orthopaedic company to introduce a plasma sprayed prosthesis in 1982.

Titanium powder (Ti 6AL 4V) is sprayed onto the acetabular cup using the Porous Plasma Spray (PPS) process. The application of porous coating does NOT raise the temperature of the ReCap/M2a-Magnum  Acetabular component enough to affect its metallurgy.

The PPS process leads to a random pore size distribution. The resulting non-interconnected pores do not create pathways for debris to migrate. The coating surface roughness ranging from 12 to 30 microns allows for early fixation through mechanical interlocking and osseointegration.
