The double mobility concept was introduced in 1976 by Prof. G. Bousquet for use in total hip replacement with the goal of preventing chronicle dislocations. This goal was successfully achieved2,3,4 by combining two fundamental principles: the first is the concept of low friction arthroplasty as described by Sir J. Charnley, where by a small 22mm head articulating against a polyethylene liner has a low risk of failure due to wear5; the second is McKee’s concept, which recommended the use of large diameter bearings to minimise the risk of subluxation.
