Hip and knee replacement patients walk for charity

Joint replacement surgery patients have joined together to raise money for charity.

Over 700 walkers took part in a special march in Cheam, the UK, to raise money for orthopaedic research.

A large number of the participants had undergone surgery at Epsom Hospital's Elective Orthopaedic Centre, with former hip and knee replacement patients joining in with the charity walk.

June Riordan, orthopaedic outcomes coordinator at the hospital and organiser of the walk, monitors joint replacement patients after surgery and claimed that it "transforms people's lives".

She added: "Most of the people taking part would not have been able to walk a mile before their surgery, so it's an amazing thing to see."

Recent data from the Scottish Arthroplasty Project showed that more active lifestyles among people in Scotland, the UK, is increasing the need for knee and hip replacement surgery in the country.
