Hip resurfacing 'less invasive than hip replacement operation'

In certain circumstances, hip resurfacing is a less invasive alternative to a total hip replacement operation and can suit some patients, an expert has claimed.

Elizabeth Neely, communications director for WorldMed Assist, stated that this newer operation is not the right option for everybody and older patients are often better suited to the more traditional procedure.

In a total hip replacement operation the hip socket and ball joint are removed and replaced with an implant but this can fail after ten or 15 years, she explained, meaning it is not always suitable for patients who are very young.

In a hip resurfacing procedure only a small shaving is taken from the femur to allow a new surface to be implanted, meaning the joint lasts a lot longer.

Earlier this month, research published in Hip International found that a resurfacing operation resulted in less of a difference in length for the operated-on leg than patients who had a hybrid hip replacement, which is where only one part of the ball and socket replacement is inserted with cement.ADNFCR-2255-ID-19301561-ADNFCR
