Osteoarthritis can be a debilitating disease but a few lifestyle changes can help to alleviate symptoms, according to one expert.
Alex Howard, an author of health books, told Natural News that osteoarthritis, which can cause large inflammation of the joints and lead to hip replacement or knee replacement surgery, causes a progressive degeneration.
He claimed it is sometimes triggered by sports and exercise placing large pressures on the joints, damaging the cartilage around the "load-bearing" joints and causing inflammation.
Diets which are high in fat and sugar and low in fruit and vegetables go some way to cause osteoarthritis in non-sporting individuals, as "micro-nutrient deficiency" is a large risk factor for potential future joint replacement, he stated.
"Whole fruits, such as apples, cherries, pineapple, grapes, oranges, bananas, kiwi, blueberries, blackberries, contain many anti-oxidants and alkalising minerals which protect the body against damage from acidity and inflammation," said Mr Howard.
Researchers from the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland recently claimed that long-term exercise reduces the risk of osteoporosis and lowers the need for joint replacement surgery in over 50s.
