Return to sport recommended after shoulder arthroplasty

A new online survey conducted by orthopaedics expert Dimitrios Christoforou has shown that the majority of surgeons recommend that people who undergo shoulder resurfacing and humeral hemiarthroplasties return to sport following surgery.
Speaking at the recent 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Christoforou was reported by Ortho Supersite as saying that those who elect for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty should ease themselves back into sporting activity.
"When looking at specific types of activities, [we] found the lowest allowance for return after reverse total shoulder and the highest following humeral hemi-resurfacing," Christoforou claimed.
However, he noted that the literature on returning to sport after shoulder surgery is limited and claimed that "long-term outcome studies are needed to assess whether these surgeon preferences are clinically supported by implant survival data in patients participating in sports after shoulder arthroplasty".
Recent research published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery has shown that young men and elderly women are the most likely to suffer from shoulder dislocations during sport.
