Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers can benefit from hip resurfacing

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis can benefit from the use of hip resurfacing arthroplasty, it has been claimed.

According to new research conducted in the UK, not only does hip resurfacing arthroplasty offer excellent post-operative functionality for those suffering with osteoarthritis of the hip, it offers good implant survival.

Tajeshwar S. Aulakh, orthopaedic surgeon at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry, led a team of surgeons in the study, which looked at 47 rheumatoid arthritis patients on the international hip resurfacing register.

They compared these against 113 patients with non-rheumatoid osteoarthritis of the hip.

With hip resurfacing, all patients showed a significant increase in post-operative hip scores, but those with rheumatoid arthritis showed the biggest improvement.

Recently, the Arthritic Association claimed that mild physical exercise can be hugely beneficial for patients with rheumatoid arthritis in terms of their perceived pain.

Lynda Scott-Williams, chief executive of the association, claimed individuals with the condition can lead full, active lives.
