Water on the knee can benefit from joint replacement

Water on the knee is a relatively common condition which, if left untreated, can result in a significant amount of pain, bruising and swelling, and even infection.
The condition can be caused by arthritis, ligament damage and trauma - including broken bones and meniscus tears.
While pain medication and antibiotics can usually clear up the problem, removing the fluid surgically is an option if problems persist.
According to Medical News Today, surgeons inspecting the knee using arthroscopy may consider repairing related knee damage during surgery.
The site also noted that "if bearing weight on the knee joint becomes intolerable, the patient may be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon for knee replacement".
Total knee replacement provides a long-term solution to the problem, something which rest, applying ice and elevating the knee cannot.
Ice is also considered a good home-remedy to osteoarthritic knee pain, according to orthopaedic surgeon Dr Samuel Blick.
Writing for the WMP Observer, Dr Blick said that rest and low-impact exercise can also be beneficial for osteoarthritis patients.
